Often we admire what catches the eye and ear. The fascination becomes intense, and pretty soon, everyone is on the same train. The lack of originality keeps the debate low as to what THEY view as "real" music. What ever is hot at the moment, you will find many followers. No one wants to be themselves; they want to be what the see on TV? Perhaps this is why we look around and see everyone looking and sounding the same.
I'm a big fan of R&B. As much as I love it, I also share a similar ear for Hip-Hop. Growing up in the 90's, music was something to look forward to. No one sounded alike; nor did they look the same. I had a cassette player with the headphones, and also a radio I kept hidden from my parents whenever I got in trouble at school. They would take away any and everything that had access to music. Often I would find unused tapes around the house and recorded my favorite songs over them. I had tapes for days! My brother and I used to record ourselves talking and singing along to our favorite tunes. That was when music meant the most to me. My favorite artists' to listen to included Jagged Edge, Deborah Cox, Bel Biv Devoe, TLC, and Brian McKnight just to name a few. Da Brat and Queen Latifah were women I admired because they brought a different sound to the game.
One thing I have noticed about the music industry is that sex sells. If you really pay attention, there are artists who portrayed being the "good" girl or guy because they had an image to maintain. Now, in today's music, you hear some of those same artists talking about their bedroom blues and hot experiences. One night stands and infidelity creates and sense of adrenaline. Especially in a song! Who doesn't enjoy an intense story line? I love them!
Me personally, I prefer to listen to independent artists. They often have much more passion in their music than a mainstream artist. They're more original and not copycats of their favorite singer or rapper. Being an independent artist, it does get hard at one point when you're trying to build a fan base. Not everyone will support you but we always have that handful of people who will even listen to our music. We work hard because we are determined for or talent to not only be discovered, but heard as well! Independent artists mostly invest in themselves if they already don't have a management team behind them. Promo is very important as well! If you don't promote, who will hear you? The blood, sweat and tears I've invested into my talent, I often doubt myself at times but I have a strong team that pushes me to keep going and my voice will soon take the world by storm.
Hats off to all of the Indie artists working on their craft and putting out great music! When you work hard, it doesn't go unnoticed.

Another artist on the come up goes by the name B.E the Individual. I've worked with him personally on a few projects and I can honestly say this guy is DOPE! Original sound, original style, different lyrics, music at its best! B.E has been putting out bangers left and right and I have yet to be disappointed. My favorite song is "Pop Quiz." Not only does he produce majority of his tracks, but he also creates his own graphic designs. Talent on top of talent. All money in, no money out.
